As a responsible dog owner, it’s easy to assume that what’s safe for us is safe for our pets —but unfortunately, that’s not always true. Whether you have a curious Goldendoodle or a tiny Toy Poodle, there are several common human foods that can be harmful or even deadly to dogs.
At Teddy Doods, we care deeply about the health and safety of every puppy we raise. That’s why we’re sharing this helpful list of the top toxic foods to avoid when feeding your furry family member.
❌ 1. Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine, which can cause vomiting, seizures, heart issues, and even death — especially in smaller dogs like Toy Poodles.
❌ 2. Grapes & Raisins
Even small amounts can lead to kidney failure in dogs. Don’t share snacks or baked goods that contain raisins!
❌ 3. Xylitol (Sugar Substitute)
Found in gum, sugar-free candy, peanut butter, and some baked goods, xylitol causes a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage.
❌ 4. Onions & Garlic
In all forms — raw, cooked, powdered — these can destroy red blood cells and lead to anemia in dogs.
❌ 5. Macadamia Nuts
These nuts can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and overheating in dogs, and symptoms may appear within hours.
❌ 6. Avocados
Avocados contain persin, which can cause stomach upset in dogs and is particularly toxic to birds and livestock as well.
❌ 7. Alcohol
Even small sips of wine, beer, or cocktails can cause liver failure, disorientation, and poisoning.
❌ 8. Cooked Bones
Especially from chicken or pork — these can splinter and cause choking or damage to the digestive tract.
❌ 9. Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks)
Caffeine affects a dog’s nervous system and heart rate, leading to symptoms like hyperactivity, seizures, or death.
❌ 10. Raw Dough
Yeast dough can expand in your dog’s stomach, causing bloating, pain, or potentially life-threatening complications.
❌ 11. Moldy Foods
Moldy leftovers or scraps from the trash can contain mycotoxins, which lead to tremors, vomiting, and seizures.
❌ 12. Salt & Salty Snacks
Too much salt can cause sodium ion poisoning, leading to excessive thirst, urination, vomiting, or even death.
🐶 Goldendoodles & Toy Poodles: Extra Care for Small Breeds
Toy Poodles and Toy/Micro Goldendoodles are especially sensitive due to their small size. Just a small amount of a toxic food can have a much bigger impact than it would on a larger breed. Always be cautious, and keep all human snacks and meals well out of reach.
